Lugna is your journal, and we built it so that only you can read it. You own what you write, your recovery phrase is yours to keep, and we cannot recover it for you if it is lost. Lugna is a companion for reflection, not therapy, medical care, or an emergency service. Everything below is the same idea, written out properly.
1. Agreeing to These Terms
These Terms of Use are an agreement between you and Aira Araffanda, Laurentius Richard, Maria Jeffina, Pires Cerullo, Poppy Hwangsa, Rayhan Faluda, and Venus Dhammiko (collectively, "The Lugna Team", or "we" and "us"), the developers of the Lugna application for iPhone and iPad ("Lugna", "the app"). By downloading, installing, or using Lugna, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the app.
Apple's Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies to your use of the app. Where these terms are more specific to Lugna, they add to it; they do not replace it.
2. What Lugna Is & Isn't
Lugna is a journaling companion: a quiet place to write, reflect with guided CBT-inspired prompts, and notice how you have been feeling over time.
Lugna is not medical care. It is not therapy, diagnosis, treatment, or an emergency service, and using it does not create any clinical relationship. Nothing the app shows you, including mood trends, streak counts, or prompts, is medical advice. If you are struggling with your mental health, please talk to a qualified professional.
If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, please reach out to your local emergency number, a crisis helpline, or someone you trust. You can find a helpline for your country at findahelpline.com. Our support page says more about this.
3. Your Account & Guest Mode
You can use Lugna in Guest Mode without creating an account. Guest journals are kept only on your device and are never synced.
To sync between devices, you create an account. You are responsible for keeping your login credentials and your device secure, including your app PIN, Face ID or Touch ID, and your device passcode. If someone has access to your unlocked device or your credentials, they may be able to reach your journal, and we cannot prevent that.
Please use Lugna only if you are old enough to agree to these terms where you live. If you are a minor, use Lugna with the permission and supervision of a parent or guardian.
4. Your Recovery Phrase (Please Read This Part)
When you first set up encryption, Lugna shows you a 12-word recovery phrase. That phrase is the key to your encrypted journal. It is generated on your device, and we never receive a copy of it. That is exactly what makes your journal private.
The consequence of that design is important, so we will say it plainly: if you lose your recovery phrase and you no longer have access to a device that holds your key, your journal cannot be recovered, not by us, not by Apple, not by anyone. We cannot reset it, look it up, or issue a new one for your existing entries.
Please write your phrase down and keep it somewhere safe and private, and keep it separate from your device. If you use iCloud Keychain, your key may also sync across your own Apple devices, which is a convenience, not a guarantee. Your phrase is the guarantee.
5. Your Content & Ownership
Everything you write in Lugna belongs to you. We claim no ownership over your journal entries, moods, or reflections.
To operate the app we need a limited permission: to store and sync your entries so they appear on your devices, and to process them as needed for features you use (for example, producing a mood chart). That permission exists only to run Lugna for you, and only for as long as you keep your data with us. Your entries are stored as encrypted data that we cannot read. See our Privacy Policy for the detail, including what happens to entries created before version 1.4.0.
6. Fair Use
Please use Lugna for its purpose: your own private reflection. In particular, do not:
- use the app to break any law, or to harm, threaten, or harass anyone;
- attempt to access another person's account or journal;
- interfere with the app's security features or the services it relies on; or
- copy, resell, or redistribute the app except as Apple's Standard EULA allows.
7. Exports & Backups
You can export your entries at any time as a password-protected encrypted backup (.lugnabackup) or as open, readable JSON (.json).
Readable JSON is not encrypted. Anyone who opens that file can read your journal, so keep it somewhere safe and share it only with people you trust. Once a file has left the app, it is yours to look after. We cannot reach it, delete it, or protect it.
8. Deleting Your Data
You can delete your account and its data from inside the app. Deletion is permanent: your cloud entries, profile, and credentials are removed, and this cannot be undone. Please export anything you want to keep first.
Deleting your account does not delete copies you exported or backed up yourself, and it does not remove data from your device's own system backups if you have those enabled. Those are managed by you and Apple, not by us.
9. Availability, Changes & Price
Lugna is free to use today. If we ever introduce paid features, they will be clearly labelled before you buy anything, and nothing you already have will be taken away without notice.
We improve the app over time, which means features may change, and syncing depends on services we do not control (Apple's App Store, Firebase, and your network connection). We aim to keep Lugna steady and available, but we cannot promise uninterrupted service.
10. Disclaimers & Liability
Lugna is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. We do not warrant that the app will be error-free, or that data will never be lost, which is why the recovery phrase in section 4 and your own exports matter.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential losses, or for lost entries, lost recovery phrases, or lost exports. Where liability cannot be excluded, our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid for the app.
Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under mandatory consumer law in your country.
11. Apple's Role
These terms are between you and us, not with Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content, and has no obligation to provide support for it. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you. Your use of the app must also comply with the App Store Terms of Service, and Apple's rules on usage limits and content apply.
12. Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms as the app changes. When we do, we will update the effective date at the top of this page, and we will tell you inside the app if a change is significant. Continuing to use Lugna after an update means you accept the updated terms.
13. Law & Contact
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Indonesia, without affecting any mandatory consumer protections you have where you live.
